The Bible was written by a man, it is heresay and it is gossip.

Some parts of the Bible are directly from God. But it was written down by a man, yes.

It's a formal commitment to that shared life.

How is there a "commitment" if there's not...actually a commitment? Can you not "commit" just as much without being married? Isn't marriage an inherently religious concept?

Except when it isn't.  And memories become more inaccurate as time passes.  The stories recorded in the Bible should be wildly inaccurate because of this.

The New Testament's standards of reliability are quite high compared to other ancient records.

However, if Jesus wasn't resurrected, what exactly happened? 😉

Eric, do you think we should teach young children that it's "normal" and "acceptable" to have multiple partners even when you're married in order to teach them about diverse lifestyles and to not be open-marriageophobes?

I think we should teach them to do what makes them happy, but within the construct of honesty with their partners.

I cannot recall accurately what I personally witnessed 30 years ago when I was 19.  The New Testament was recorded 400 years after the Old Testament.

And I think that will not ultimately lead to happiness - but misery. If one was happy the "want" would be fulfilled. It isn't. Hence the "want."

You're biased about the honesty part too. There are people who are happier being dishonest based on their evolutionary instincts. Why are you bigoted towards those folks?

Do you remember where you were when 9/11 happened? Challenger explosion?

There was a book, I think it was Cold Case Christianity that really talked about the reliability of the New Testament and compared that to other ancient documents. Again, even if some of it was lost/mistranslated/made up, as long as Jesus was resurrected, Christianity is still true. 😉

If want was fulfilled by marriage there would be no need to squander a Commandments on the topic.

Or perhaps God wants us to realize how important it is?

An unhealthy marriage is probably not fulling that want - perhaps that's why people try to fulfill that want with another?

I think people are often happy in their marriages but businessmen get horny on the road when the hottie at the bar is flirting with them and these men just don't think they'll be caught.

Look at theft:  most thefts are crimes of opportunity, not based on need.

If happiness is based on geography...I don't think that counts. 🤣

But umm love wins?

Okay, same for the women at work then.  Or same for the friend's wife at the BBQ.

I mean, looking at porn is cheating but nearly everyone does it.  And some couples look at porn together to spice it up.

I understand that people do it. That doesn't mean it's okay.
