You Want a Confederate Monument? My Body is a Confederate Monument

Interesting read.

What I have trouble processing is watching video the other night on TV of grown men and women riding down the streets in golf carts flying the Confederate flag and yelling "White Power!"

How is that possible in 2020? That's not free speech, that is inciting violence and racial hatred.

I would (like to) think that if that happened where I live that those people wouldn't dare to show their faces in public again.

Don’t get your all bent out of shape, what’s the big deal of changing the name of a school from a racist dude?

Oh wait, is this another one of those, “its not racist it’s muh histury!”

It's going to be fun to see how Stanford and Yale deal with it. There is a lot of prestige invested in those names.

My prediction: they are not going to like it, and try to sweep in under the rug, hoping it passes and they can hide the history.

I agree. Looks like Dan Snyder is changing the redskins name. And anything which makes Dan Snyder upset makes me very happy.

As Ive said here numerous times, its when dollars that matter get redirected because of an issue, that the issues change. Thank Nike and Fedex. Not the people who have been "protesting" now for decades. Protesting is your right, but its a total waste of time, and more often than not, asking for trouble.

The first thing that comes to my mind when reading this article is something very politically incorrect.

I think about what she is saying at a much deeper level.  How much of the human race is here now because of rape?

We are very complex, this is not a problem of white America, it has happened throughout history!

The only reason Nike and Fedex care is because those protests have captured the zeitgeist.

There have been protests around the name for decades though. Its when there are enough dollars at stake, that everyone moves their asses. I think both Fedex and Nike did a great job of seeing where the puck was going. Nike particularly, who did the same thing when grabbing Kapernick as a spokesperson. Its always, all about the Benjamins. Being a "social leader" is a great way to market your brand. Its very valuable. And like here, costs almost nothing.

Exactly

None of these companies became “woke” until they were confident enough that they could continue to make money. It’s just a new marketing angle. They don’t actually give a shit. If they did, then they would have taken a stand when it was unfavorable in society.

Time to rename Yale:

https://amgreatness.com/2020/07/02/american-greatness-ad-in-new-york-times-calls-for-yale-to-be-renamed-after-jeremiah-dummer/

Stanford should be next, since Leland Stanford imported Chinese slave labor to build the railroads and considered the Chinese inferior to whites.

This shit will never end.

I don't think all issues deserve the same level concern:

Historical figures/statues cannot be equated with racial profiling, unnecessary force by police officers, discrimination, inequality in income...these issues need immediate attention...whitewashing history is not something that needs to be dealt with presently.

I'm actually not in favour of removing all vestiges of historical inequities, because how do you teach children about those inequities?  Rather than removing statues of Washington, Jefferson, etc...add another plaque talking about other parts of their life that today would not be acceptable.  Humans are flawed...even among the best of us...we can't change history to current norms or morality, but we can enlighten people that these historical figures lived in different times.

Cheers!
