Castanza
I will say, it would have been better served if Cuccinelli would have followed up with something along the lines of. "And we (the US govt) call on the American people to step up and provide charity and a helping hand for people who are entering this country." I believe voluntary personal charity is a deeply rooted American theme; yet we hardly hear about it anymore. And sadly we also have many cases where govt interferes in personal charity. LC
Oh I totally agree. I think local non-profits and charitable orgs are probably the most efficient means of allocating resources to the needy. The real shame is that even non-profits have been abused by the rich and famous to avoid taxes and provide cash flows/assets to their heirs; and the greedy capitalist to raise funds under the guise of charity/disease research, only to line their pockets with outsized salaries. Sure, they certainly have. But that doesn't mean the proper solution to this issue would be coerced charity through the means on increased taxes. LC
Agreed! I think a mix is needed. In some cases the government does a better job but in other cases they do not. Largescale programs providing basics (shelter, food) are more suited towards government involvement. Local concerns (warm clothing in cold climates for example) are better handled by local groups. Most people on this forum are wealthier than average, we should be helping those in need. Extend your dining tables, not the height of your fences :)
