Bush (fundraising through 12/31/2002) Raised: $3.2 million Cash on hand: $3.8 million Might be fake news though, it's from CNN.
gfp
"The reason for that massive disparity is simple: Neither Bush nor Obama actively sought to raise money for their re-election campaigns during their first two years in office. Bush collected just $265,000 in individual contributions over those first two years while Obama actually refunded more than $179,000 in individual contributions in his first two years." Gregmal
I think that's missing the point. This guy, a total outsider with no support from the establishment(originally), has walked into the game of politics, and dominated, doing it completely different than anyone who came before him. Trump is going to need that money where Bush and Obama did not. Bush and Obama both knew that their own party would not challenge them in the primary for their 2nd term. Trump is fairly certain his party will contest him. There will be no incumbent president in 2020 that can rest and wait for the general election. 2020 is going to see 2 highly contested primaries just like 2016. Correct - I'm not so sure he will need lots of money, look what he did without the money first go around. Trump controls the media, he gets on TV for 10-15 minutes whenever he wishes via Fox interviews, etc. He gets 1 hour coverage on his state speaking tours, goes direct to the American people. The media is always covering Trump and ignoring the other candidates. Look at all those great candidates the Republicans put up in 2016 - and could not get coverage. What Trump did in 2016 was genius - the media needs him, although they hate him. He had little money, Hillary had $1B and all those expensive advisors telling her to do this and that - based on their polling. Trump's genius is that he didn't listen to all those highly paid advisors. He figured out a way to get his own free media coverage. I'm not seeing how that is going to change. I don't see how his strategy is transferable to anyone else.

Trump is paranoid so he may be concerned about it. Or he may not even realize someone could run against him. He is pretty ignorant of process. It would be quite surprising if the GOP has a highly contested nomination. Sitting governors or senators are put in a very tough spot if they run both in terms of appearance and fund raising. They have to run for the party but against the party's "standard-bearer." That is a fine line to walk, unless he is unpopular within the party, whch is not currently the case. There is a reason why it was Buchanan (talk show host) against Bush in 1992 or Reagan (former gov) against Ford in 1976. Kennedy against Carter in 1980 is unusual but Carter had way lower approval ratings than Trump, and his nomination was fascinating (Uncommitted took two firsts and two seconds in the first four contests, and the party never coalesced around Carter at the end). Rubio won't run. Cruz won't. Doubtful Romney would. Kasich might but he didn't build a funding network in 2016. Flake wouldn't get much traction at all. If Sasse decided he did not want to run for re-election he might, but evangelicals are nearly blindly supporting Trump. Absent a scandal that is not likely to change. If it doesn't improve their standing for running in 2024, why do it? A token challenge that lasts a few primaries seems more likely.

And Trump will talk with anyone unlike Obama. Have you seen that 60 Minutes interview this week-end? Ever seen more lack of respect towards a President from a journalist than Lesley Stahl has demonstrated? Interrupting, constantly offering judgement instead of listening. Unbeliveable! Sean Hannity has shown more respect and professionalism with people he profoundly disagrees with. Cardboard
